I reckon you probably already know that...[Thomas More] coined the word 'utopia' from the Greek ou-topos meaning 'no place' or 'nowhere'. https://www.bl.uk/learning/timeline/item126618.html

Did you ever read Mark Twain's "Innocents Abroad"? It's a travelogue of a trip he took around the world on a steamship. Published 4 years after the American Civil War. People don't change. Times do.

Thank you for your comment, Oaf. Yes, nowhere is a most appropriate translation of utopia. And yes, "Innocents Abroad" confirms Solomon's observation in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun. Thanks again for reaching out.

Thanks for reaching out sopwith (or Mr. Camel?). No doubt baby boomers have dropped the ball big time in many regards, not least in how we have pursued the conveniences of secularism to the exclusion of faith and the moderating, life-enhancing influences of traditional religion since the early 20th century. But I find it difficult to condemn people of any generation for falling prey to the illusions and convention of the times in which they live. Just as I wouldn't wash away the stunning achievements of the Founding Fathers because of their personal associations with slavery, I have a hard time condemning baby boomers for the desire not too revisit the privations of their parents: little things like the Great Depression and World War II. Perhaps my essay, The Rise of Huxwell, might be more up your alley: https://open.substack.com/pub/qolrm/p/the-rise-of-huxwell?r=7hc45&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web.

I find this article sorta diluted and complacent. Only words I could think of.

The one big truth nobody else I've read has admitted is that the baby boomers turned 180 degrees, lost all their principles, and turned into materialistic volvo driving weenies who drink starbucks and gossip in Trader Joe.s - the store that invented shrink-flation.

No talk about the pushing of gays/trannies etc from official sources and foisted on kids for instance. Look, I don't care about them or their rights. By that I mean I really don't - Let them have whatever rights they want.... It's not really what they want- they want ATTENTION foremost - if the world was bored of them and treated them the same as everyone else - I suspect they would go into a clinical depression. This is the age of the Ego - and Simulation (anti-social media for instance) - hence all the tattoos... such a need to be "special". Learn something about your true divine self - not the non-existant "person" - the desire and "need" go away.

No doubt you’ve gleaned I’m a Huxley enthusiast. He fascinates me. The prototypical apostate.

I don’t discount any possibilities, regardless how implausible. Huxley’s prescience was so inexplicable, and otherworldly, I often ponder whether he was a prophet of sorts. A clarion call. Though I’m not particularly a religious adherent in practice( I’m Jewish) I do. believe there is far more to our being than the obvious or tactile.

My son in law is a practicing Hindu. Not as devout as his parents, but not dismissive. I find his mother far more interesting because the religion itself is so interesting. Ironically, Huxley became enrapt with Hindu symbology. Fascinated with the Dancing Shiva. Something else I stumbled upon recently without searching for it. Completely unware. If you so desire, search Huxley/ Dancing Shiva.. If not off base, I , think you’ll be startled. Curious to know your takeaway. If you see any parallels to a major topic . A despicable abuse. Can’t recall where I read that Huxley had in fact, adopted Hinduism. During his video” tutorial”( I’ve no idea how to categorize it) as was his habit, he became so engrossed in the subject, his voices his thoughts aloud, seemed to forget he is presented to an audience. He kept repeating,” Why don’t we have anything like this?”. It was quite funny, but I wonder the same thing. What do we have? Horseradish, a shank bone, blood, boils, frogs , locusts dead livestock and wrath. And guilt. Lots of guilt.😂

Expand full comment

Thanks, Gail. I'll try to find Huxley/Dancing Shiva. Yes, Huxley was a modern 20th-century prophet in a class that included many modern Jewish prophets as well: Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud to name just a couple. And yes, Jewish traditions are very bare bones and unspectacular compared to other religions. But many of those traditions were born on the run and practiced nomadically. Guilt, however, is a different beast altogether...

Several things. Shiva’s foot on the back of the “ hideous dwarf”, the circular surround that eerily resembles a Covid virus and yes, the balance of good and evil. Huxley’s point by point detailing of Shiva’s multiple symbolism is stunning.

Fauci /Faustus…. Hideous by any name.

I’m fascinated by Hindu philosophy. It’s quite interesting because every element is represented by gods with a higher God/god keeping the cycle balanced. There is something quite beautiful in the collective of spirituality, math, established science, nature, nurture and the divine. The religion is often subject to mockery, unfairly, by those who can’t be bothered researching the “ “ what” and “ why”. Best example- the Sacred Cow. Hindus don’t “ worship” cows. The female cow provides milk, nourishing a population that might otherwise starve. Malnutrition, infant mortality- it is the reverence of life. Ergo, nature, nurture and the Divine. No cows, no milk.

And what better describes the very reality of existence than karma?

Our Jewish daughter married the son of Hindu immigrants from India. Wonderful family values and appreciation for all things beautiful and decent. Very kind ,erudite and generous. And they are extremely respectful of her Judaic religiosity, culture and practice.plus, a way cool wedding !

Due to my own life-changing personal experience, I have been focused upon the phenomenon societal addiction for more than a few years. Deviating - apostasy - from the compulsive (and compulsory) memes, scientism, 'revealed wisdom' and from the new-and-improved fascist state (which is omnipresent and omni-coercive, thanks to big tech) has become essential to recovery - indeed to retaining sanity; to keeping a hold on reality.

A telling case in point: a dispassionate, objective analysis of the shrill demand for compelled speech, in the form of 'pronouns', for instance, is not really about respect for individuals who may be in whatever manner different from ourselves. "Respect" for individuals is being used as thin cover for what is really a demand for a credo or loyalty oath; obeisance requires that you mouth fealty to the faith on pain of excommunication, not only from the illiberal Borg, but from job, bank, equality under the law, (anti-)social media, etc. The simple truth is that one may rather easily be kind to and allow for the dignity of any other person without being remade as a ventriloquist's dummy performing an oath.

Thank you for this incisive essay, which so aptly describes the religious/addictive ethos of our betters. Few recognize the intersection of excessive religiosity and addiction - rather like science and scientism.

Thank you for your insightful post, Civil Westman. We find orthodoxy in all things, including addiction. When addiction assumes the status of default social condition by design, when it becomes the rule rather than the exception, it assumes -- by definition -- a certain orthodoxy. You might be interested in my essays, The truth About Addiction (https://open.substack.com/pub/qolrm/p/the-truth-about-addiction?r=7hc45&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web), and The Addiction Algorithm (https://open.substack.com/pub/qolrm/p/the-addiction-algorithm?r=7hc45&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web). I'd love to hear your thoughts. Finally, in what I call the Great Age of Addiction we find excess in just about everything except peace of mind. That includes manufactured pop-religiosity (I refer to it as polytheistic narcissism), science, and technology. Together they make for an unholy trinity. Thanks very much once again for your comment.

Jeff, I wake up on the wrong side of the bed every morning, provided I’d been able to fall asleep the night before.😇

Kidding aside, I don’t believe in “ random” or coincidence.Long story, but it has to do with math, energy, and the Fibonacci Sequence. By any name, what goes around comes around. Have a very weird memory storage. What may have seemed of no particular importance—later becomes part of a pattern. Puzzle pieces. They’ve all dovetailed into a very dark reality, planned for decades. Every seeming inconsequential bit of minutia has tied together into what is now the “ Great Reset” aka Build Back Better-aka-Liberal Worder Order- Agenda 21, Agenda 2030 event 201, Operation Dark Winter- but horrifyingly a Post-Constitutional, Post-1984 Brave New World 666AF ( After Ford) Fourth Reich Ultimate Revolution. A Central One World Fiefdom ruled by tyrannical sociopathic powerful technocrats over a transhuman, genetically engineered androgynous largely depopulated, sterile slavedom.

It is as though they’ve used Huxley’s epic work of sardonic fiction to create a playbook.

Years later, Huxley became increasingly concerned that life was indeed imitating art and desperately tried to warn of where we were heading and at a pace far more rapid than he thought possible. He was met with scorn, patronization and dismissal. During a 1958 interview with Mike Wallace, Huxley laid out a prophetic vision so precise, he would have appeared eccentric and fanciful. When I fell upon it 4 yrs ago, it was chilling. Rewatching it over the years, it became frightening. Watching it a few weeks ago, I’ve never experienced such overwhelming, all encompassing terror. Every prediction combined with the even more horrific entries in Brave New World have come to fruition and nary a single seated “ representative”, candidate, media talking head or “investigative journalist” in a name recognized publication has uttered a peep. Only a select few Substackers and citizen journalists, all banned, cancelled and hunted.

But not for Tucker, nothing would have been brought to light. He created a movement uniting the most formerly disparate voices. New alliances. If said outlets can survive.

Yesterday Russell Brand became the latest targeted smear.

Yes, sleep is an elusive elixir these days. And yes, Huxley's 1958 interview with Mike Wallace rightfully horrified many who have resurrected it since. His prescience, like Orwell's, compels respect and attention. According to Mattias Desmet's book, The Psychology of Totalitarianism, only a small percentage of the population is required to actively and persistently speak up against the aspiring forces of totalitarianism in order to prevent a society from slipping into totalitarianism. Of course, his numbers were culled largely from the study of historical encounters with 20-century totalitarian regimes. 21st-century totalitarianism may be a more resistant strain, however, in no small measure because digital scale has vastly increased both the sheer number and size of ideologically aligned institutions -- domestically and internationally. What was once a national or -- at most -- regional affliction is now global. Accordingly, our 21st-century encounter with totalitarianism may be with us for the next generation or two. Speaking truth to power will likely become increasingly perilous in the months and years ahead. The apostates can only continue to speak up and lead by example...

I replied above your comment versus below. Organizational skill isn’t something I’m proud of.

Mattias Desmet is stellar and the book was deeply engrossing. He’s also an excellent communicator

Tucker grabbed my attention when he ran the Tech Tyranny series. Prior to that sudden shift, he was just another smug, status quo political pundit. His show segued to the most diverse, illuminating and riveting dynamic coverage of global events, exceptional guests and topics so pertinent that would otherwise never have seen the light of day. Tucker also became very empathetic to people unfairly persecuted, animal rights, divergent ideologies and basically spurned what he’d long aligned with. Fox exposed itself as a fraudulent, corporate water bearer. The betrayal was epic and Fox became disposable. A subpar, unwatchable cast of redundancy. Hannity has always been excruciating, Laura and her Charlie McCorthy ventriloquist dummy- emphasis on dummy, the uber-imbeciles Kilmeade, Failla,Jeanine, Concha, Lahren, Tarlov, Campos-Duffy, Boothe, Arnot, Steve Doocy, Hurt,Duffy,Cavuto… the insufferable Thiessen, Rove,Lindsey,Bayer, Benson, Gowdy, Gigot,Lieu, Lotter, Keane,Hoffman, Neville,Shawn, Kurtz, Short, Domenich….

The Pollyannas- Bream, McEnany,Earhardt, Corke,…

Who does that leave? Tammy Bruce, Tyrus,Bartiromo, Tulsi., Lawrence Jones, Leo Terrell… They don’t get enough airtime. As per Tulsi, they’re waiting for her to trip up and then , buh-bye.

NewsMax might qualify as worse. But for Eric Schmitt and Wendy Bell… unwatchable.

LOL! I've been an "apostate" since I was five at my first day of kindergarten in Catholic School. I slugged a Pollack who knocked over my block fort. I had to kneel in front of class until lunch.

And at Ash Wednesday Mass in First Grade, I ducked out of church and hid in the bathroom.

"Where is your ash cross, Timmy?" Said the nun.

"I washed it off in the bathroom."

The bullshit at the end of the essay about political parties is just that, bullshit!

Colleges are bullshit, too. As are "intellectuals".

And BTW, I don't like being around other "apostates."

Thanks for your comment, Timmy. Hard to discern from your post what apostasy you've lived since the first grade. But even the childhood experiences you cite seem to strain the definition. You're likely not the only kid who punched another kid in kindergarten, or ducked out of Ash Wednesday services in the first grade. Nothing all that unique about your hatred of college or intellectuals either; puts you in league right now with at least half the country. That you don't like being around other apostates comes as no surprise. Thanks again for reaching out.

Thanks, Timmy. Methinks you doth protest too much. Walking out on Ash Wednesday in the first grade doesn't make you an apostate any more than gender confusion at the same age makes you a transexual. And if I am an intellectual, at least I came by it honestly, without the benefit of high school or college. You seem more like a renegade than an apostate. Both serve their respective functions. Both deliver a message. But they aren't the same message...

Jeff Einstein: LOL! I knew as a kid that the Catholic religion was 90% hoo-doo. That's the definition of an apostate. Back in the 1200s I would have been burned at the stake.

I also think 90% of people who say they are apostates or renegades are full of shit. They are all talk and no action.

I learned physics and chemistry in high school. Also some Latin. Glad I did.

There was no sexual confusion when I was in school. About 10% of our class were gay/lesbians and they knew who they were and so did we. That was back in 8th grade, maybe sooner. One of my friends was gay. He was the only man to make the cover of Playboy (he was on the back cover). Last I heard, he was living on Dupont in DC having made a fortune selling real estate to the crooks in Washington DC.

Thanks for the comment and article.

PS: I was the only kid out of hundreds who didn't do the Ash Wednesday rite that day.
