Not sure why, but my work of late has taken me back to my early grade school years when a) I still attended class, and b) when all of my photos were still in B&W—largely because I couldn’t afford the costs of buying and processing color film.

Subtract.

Color TV was still a few years in the future when I first picked up my father’s Argus 35mm camera. Back then I lived in a mostly black and white mass media world like everyone else. Apart from the occasional Saturday matinee at the Sequoia Theatre (where two bits still bought a double feature and a couple of shorts), my brain had not yet been exposed to the far more immersive (and addictive) mass media world of electronically reproduced color. At the time color was still a fairly precious commodity in popular culture, found most frequently in Saturday morning cartoons, or in print media like comic books, magazines, and the Sunday funnies.

Subtract.

Looking back, I now realize that black and white was to electronic media in the 1950s and early 60s what radio was to TV: a far smaller data set that demanded from me a correspondingly larger investment of imagination and emotion in order to extract whatever emotive and spiritual magic was concealed within. Like radio, black and white required me to fill in the visual blanks with my own imagination, to search for nuance and meaning revealed somewhere in the shadows and contrasts of blacks and whites and grays.

Subtract.

Fade out, fade in: Now well into my eighth decade, with the consumption of tens of thousands of color HDTV programs, streaming videos, and films under my belt, I still can’t shake my emotional and spiritual connection with black and white, how it always whets my appetite for more, and how it still persists in my dreams. Perhaps the most enduring element of my relationship with B&W manifests in how—unlike color—it compels me time and again to slow down with a commensurate demand to participate. For me, color is the drive-thru. B&W is the sit-down diner…

Subtract.

Is the quality of life in a world of excess a function of subtraction? Can less electronic data translate into a greater connection? You tell me.

Glory captures the full magnificence of a late summer sunset over the Loxahatchee, the northernmost extension of the Everglades. I mastered it as an homage to the great Hudson River School landscape artists of the 19th century.

Greetings!

My primary grievance with our media-induced culture of endless grievance is how little room it leaves in our hearts and minds for the most healing and most easily forgotten of all emotions: gratitude. Correspondingly, my new holiday resolution is to share only words and thoughts of gratitude for the people and things I’m most grateful for this holiday season, starting with this Thanksgiving, the perfect opportunity to share a few more moments with cherished friends and family.

One thing that my recent re-dedication to fine art photography has taught me is that our lives are defined far less by our spectacular successes and failures, and far more by the far more commonplace and pedestrian moments we experience in our day-to-day lives. These little snapshots in time are the real stuff of life and the stuff of all art. Individually and collectively they tap the essential rhythms of the universe, the lights and shadows that illuminate our lives, even for the briefest of moments: smiles and laughs and tears and victories and defeats that remain with us — as if on call — forever. Ephemeral, it seems, is never and always…

Never and always because each fleeting moment seems not to vanish in the winds of time but to burrow instead deep into the shadows and contours of our hearts and minds. There they reside in collective silent repose unless or until called upon by conscious or unconscious will to reassert themselves as color and texture and context for yet another fleeting moment. Together they are destined to be passed along for eons in the eternal consciousness of our genetic codes. Welcome or unwelcome as they may be, the ephemeral moments of our lives are — like the Internet — forever.

Think of each fleeting moment in time as but a single frame of an epic cinematic masterpiece, an exclusive opus for your eyes only. Like a piece of childhood trivia that seemingly appears out of nowhere in the middle of an adult conversation decades after the fact, then — once invoked — recedes again just as quickly into the encroaching shadows of memory.

Which leads me back to gratitude, perhaps the closest we can get to an applied appreciation for the never/always dynamic of ephemeral. Because the things that truly matter in our lives — our family and friends, our health, our communities, our nation, and our God-given freedoms — will always make themselves apparent, sometimes with their presence and sometimes in their absence. Our gratitude for them breathes life and corporeal substance into them — and imbues us in return with their strength and character. Be grateful for them despite their many flaws precisely because they are just like you: never and always ephemeral works in progress.

May you and yours be blessed with a warm and wondrous Thanksgiving. And with many cherished memories of forever fleeting moments…

The heliconia plant outside my lanai blooms all year, sending up brilliant flames of orange blossoms with jet black tips atop small forests of tall slender stalks…

The blossoms remain vividly intact for a few days before the petals fade then drop away like memories, and the once vibrant blossom now sits silently subdued and barren like an abandoned storefront in an aging strip mall, still erect but absent the strident flames of youth…

Until a new one comes along…

On Thursday September 4th I’ll release my And So It Goes Collection of six limited edition fine art giclée prints. Each honors the beauty and lessons revealed in the passage of time, things that not only bind us in some measure to the past, but things whose lessons and memories inform the present and endure across generations as well. A wonderfully quiet and evocative collection with something for everyone…

Each edition in the And So It Goes Collection will be limited to a total of five 24”x16” prints, reproduced with archival Canon Lucia inks on exquisite Hahnemühle Fine Art Photo Rag paper for true museum/gallery quality that will stand the test of time.

Each 24”x16” print will arrive ready to frame, individually signed and numbered, with a 1” white border and serialized Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

My And So It Goes Collection will be available for only two weeks, starting Thursday, September 4th. After September 18th, any remaining prints will be retired for at least one year.

During the two-week introduction of my And So It Goes Collection I’ll host a live one-hour chat on Substack Notes and a 1-hour live event on Facebook as well. I’ll explain what compelled me to immortalize these particular moments in time, my creative process from shutter release to finished artwork, and my hopes for how each artwork will enhance the spiritual, social, emotional, and physical quality of life for my clients. Bill Bernbach, the godfather of modern American advertising, once observed that our brains are not designed to pursue the truth. Rather, he suggested, our brains are designed to pursue the advantage.

If true, any pursuit of the truth would have to classify as extracurricular, something we choose to do despite our genetic and chemical predispositions, and despite our obvious preference to seek the advantage. That’s not to say that there aren’t certain universal or divine truths. Also not to say that our deliberations can’t arrive on occasion at a place that approximates the truth.

Of course, any pursuit of the truth, divine or otherwise, would need to assiduously avoid all commercial media. After all, his intimate relationship with commercial media was the reason Bill Bernbach made the statement in the first place.

Watched “And So It Goes”, the wonderful Billy Joel documentary, on HBO Max. While never a huge fan of his music, I would cheerfully concede his talent and cultural impact over the years.

Without spoiling any overt storylines for those who have yet to see the two-part documentary, how his father abandoned him as a young boy prompted me to think a lot about how my grandfather abandoned my father, also just a young boy at the time. The event punched a psychic hole in my father’s heart, a hole that never healed, but — as with Billy Joel — fired and fueled a prodigious creative engine instead. Like an oyster that shapes a beautiful pearl around an irritating grain of sand that it can’t dislodge.

I know my father — some years before he passed away from sheer exhaustion at the age of eighty — eventually forgave his father, at least between his ears. The heart, however, considers things differently, apparently along a less rigid timeline, and sometimes cannot or will not heal in the span of a single lifetime. Some wounds simply remain irreconcilable for individuals, families, and entire populations alike. Even when successful, conscious efforts to move past them, to move on enough to reclaim or salvage from them some working semblance of sovereignty over our own lives and destinies, rarely if ever fully extinguish the psychic flames that continue to smolder, often for generations.

We need to reconcile ourselves to the fact that the hurt, the psychic pain, may forever remain a part of our unconscious selves. Our conscious selves, however, share the unconscious need not to forget (the irritation) with a different imperative: the desire and need to move on (the pearl). The essential human dichotomy resides in how our hearts and minds reconcile the insults and injuries of the past with the promise of an uncertain future. The same dichotomy designates only the present — right here, right now — as the exclusive time to get the job done, the exclusive place to put the psychic hurts of the past farther behind us while we man up and move on: while we build pearls for the future. Absent a conscious and sincere effort to put the past in the past, absent a conscious and sincere effort to move on, we will never create more pearls. Only crimes against humanity.

We all have our own litany of psychic injustices and pains, some incurred in our lifetimes, others passed along from previous generations. Turn them into pearls. My art is my pearl. My daughter is my pearl. A thousand and one grains of sand. A thousand and one pearls. And so it goes…

On a cosmic scale, art — like life — is a function of rhythm, and all artists create by ear: Painters paint by ear, sculptors sculpt by ear, composers compose by ear, writers write by ear, actors act by ear, and photographers capture moments in time by ear. Precisely because art imitates life, there is no creation outside the rhythm. At least not for me.

Of course, we are all attracted to magnificent and grand spectacles like sunsets and cityscapes and mountain ranges and Bengal tigers and Super Bowls. My art, however, finds meaning and form in mostly little, obscure, and commonplace things — the things others often ignore or neglect.

In truth we live our lives not in grand moments or spectacles, but in thousands of little moment-to-moment snapshots: mostly quiet, mostly commonplace, mostly pedestrian, and mostly without fanfare or celebrity of any sort. These are the snapshots that -- over a period of years and decades -- build a life. Likewise, these are the snapshots, the little moments in time, that catch my eye and find expression in my art: what I call the art of little things.

Welcome to Jeff Einstein Fine Art Photography: the art of little things.

Relax, you’re not crazy. What is now Jeff Einstein Fine Art Photography was formerly the Quality of Life Resistance Movement. But I realized some months ago — after several years of exhaustive health challenges in my immediate family — that sociopolitical commentary was simply too temporal to hold my interest any longer, and I yearned for more of the sacred and eternal in my life. So, well into my eighth decade, I determined to focus on my art instead — a long-forsaken passion just now re-emerging in my life with a welcome roar.

This Substack blog will become the newsletter extension of my online gallery at JeffEinsteinArt.com, where you’ll always find the most current collections of my limited edition artworks, including many of the ones you’ll see here. I live in a retirement community in Delray Beach FL, a place I call Seinfeld Central Casting — where you can’t throw a brick and not hit a retired Jew from Long Island.

My friends back north still wonder how it was possible for me to trade the hustle and bustle of NYC for the pickleball and weathered shuffleboard courts of Palm Beach County. “Because this,” I tell them, “is the last refuge of Jewish American culture,” the end-of-days terminus for American Jews. This is the real reason why I left New York:

The above (plus my family legacy) explains why I aspire to life among the old Jews in South Florida. “Whataya think, I’ve never seen a pandemic before? Believe me, I’ve seen hundreds of pandemics. Thousands! Aaaahhh!”

I’ve always been consumed with and by freedom. Probably why I’ve had layovers at airports that lasted longer than most of my jobs, why I prefer cats to dogs, and why I far prefer baseball to other organized sports.

Indeed, the older I get the more consumed with and by freedom I become. Maybe because the physical freedom of my youth is far behind me now in the rearview mirror of my life, and I feel myself closing in on the day when I may need some help to get around and manage my affairs. And although I don’t fear death, I do fear the physical deterioration that rides shotgun — if I’m lucky. Hopefully, my yearnings for spiritual freedom will continue to grow even as my physical freedom wanes. Not at all sure how that will manifest over time, or how I’ll deal with it if and when it does.

Lifting Off the Loxahatchee memorializes a gloriously free moment in time as a common boat-tailed grackle lifts out of the cool Loxahatchee waters after a delightful sunset bath. How simple. How grand. How free.

Took the above photo a couple of months ago at the Loxahatchee, not far from my home in Delray Beach. I publish it here and elsewhere because it evokes in me (now well into my seventies) a yearning for simpler, quieter moments — and hope it might do the same for others. I would like for it to restore a sense of calm and proportion.

Not that my life is all that raucous these days; only that my thoughts seem at times much louder and more chaotic than external circumstance might otherwise justify. Those are the times when I want to hang out the metaphorical “Gone Fishing” sign…

Best advice for those moments (from an old man):

1. Go fishing.

2. Turn off the TV.

3. Set aside your smartphone.

4. Immerse your bare feet in a box of kittens.
